Shoplifting
I was on a call the other day where some neighborhood kids could not get along so momma decided to involve the police. While I was there one of the guys got dispatched to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifting where an off duty deputy was fighting with the suspect.
I quickly finished my call and headed towards Wal-Mart lights and siren. A short time later another officer arrived on scene and said everything was ok and that I could reduce code, so I did.
I arrived on scene and saw who the deputy was and immediately thought "I should have known." It was one of the detectives that I really like, but this detective has a reputation. It seems he is always getting into things.
The detective had just gotten off of work and stopped by Wal-Mart to get a couple of things on his way home. He saw a juvenile take some candy and put it in his pocket. The detective confronted the juvenile and tried to talk to him. The detectives intent was to find the juveniles parents and let them know what was going on. The juvenile took some of the candy and threw it on the ground and started to walk away. The detective was in plain clothes but clearly a police officer, he had his gun and badge on in plain view. The detective grabbed the juvenile and the juvenile started fighting. After a short scuffle he handcuffed the juvenile, but by this time the juveniles mother and several other people were there giving the deputy a hard time.
Another officer transported the juvenile to the station and contacted juvenile probation. They handle juvenile arrests since we do not have a juvenile facility in the county. They would not take custody of the juvenile. The juvenile ended up being written a citation for theft and being released to his parents.
It's just another example of the system being messed up. A 12 year old juvenile can fight with the police and juvenile will not take him into custody. That sends a great message to the juvenile so next time when he is bigger and stronger he may fight because he didn't get in trouble the last time he fought the police.
After the juvenile was released to his parents I ended up with the detectives handcuffs. I took them to the Sheriff's Office and made sure some of his co-workers knew he got beat up by a 12 year old. Hopefully they gave him a hard time.
Someday I may tell the story of him pushing me out of the way so he could break a window of a car out at the end of a pursuit. He denies it, but I have the video that proves it.
