Burglary in Progress

A while back we had a call that was dispatched as a burglary in progress. The information said that the complainant had heard glass break and then heard someone inside an neighboring apartment.

I get there at the same time as another officer and sure enough we find a broken window. We look in it and see that the room has been ransacked. So we go to the front door to see if we can get in. We can hear someone inside as we get to the front door. I check and find that the door is unlocked.

The other officer covers me as I open the door. The door wont open very far. As I look in I can see why. The living room has been completely trashed, everything is turned over, the whole floor is covered. I force the door open more and slowly work my way into the living room.

As I get in a little further I see a naked lady with her back to me. She is in the kitchen turning water on. It is apparent she is not a burglar. The way the living room floor is I can't get to her real easily. So I start to talk to her. As I talk to her she walks back towards the bedrooms. By this time a female officer has come to the door. She climbed across the bar across the stove and into the kitchen. From there it is a little easier for her to get where the woman was. The female officer found the water on in the bathroom.

The woman told the officer there was someone in the bedroom. By this time we are pretty sure that this lady is having mental problems. The female officer watches as the woman starts to tear up a bedroom. Then the woman starts acting like she is going to pass out so we call an ambulance.

We decide that the best way for the paramedics to get to the woman is through a bedroom window. So we begin to feverishly clear a path. We move the bed which had been knocked over, the bedding, books, papers makeup as we are clearing the room we find a lamp that is on buried underneath sheets and pillows. The sheets and pillows are hot to the touch. Just a little longer and there would have been a fire.

We find out that the lady has recently had some cancer treatments including some surgery. The lady is transported to the hospital for physical/psychological treatment. We turn of the water in the house so it doesn't flood and leave.
